Every October the calls start: droppings in the garage, a chewed bag of dog food, scratching in the wall at night. As Treasure Valley nights cool off, mice go looking for somewhere warm, and an attached garage is usually the easiest way in.
Find the gaps first
A mouse can squeeze through a gap about the size of a dime. Walk your garage with a flashlight and check the corners of the garage door, where pipes and wires come through the wall, and the gap under the side door. Daylight showing through is a sure sign.
Seal what you find
- Pack small gaps with steel wool, then seal over it. Mice chew through foam and caulk alone.
- Replace worn garage door seals and add a door sweep to the side door.
- Store pet food and birdseed in sealed plastic or metal bins.
